Destructive Goal Pursuit

I have just received a copy of the book, Destructive Goal Pursuit, The Mount Everest Disaster. It studies the story of the 1996 Mt. Everest climbing disaster that was told in the book Into Thin Air. Here are some initial thoughts in the book:

- setting and pursuing high and difficult goals often drive failure, not just success

- learning and adaptation, not vision alone, lie at the heart of leadership

- effective teamwork and adaptation, not simply goal-setting, leads to success in the face of novel situations

Here's a new term:

Goalodicy- A situation in which the normally helpful process of goal-setting becomes dysfunctional: the effort put toward achieving a goal results in unintended consequences.
